What does BBY mean in Andor?

BBY means ‘Before the Battle of Yavin.’

The Battle of Yavin is the name given to the attack on the Death Star in A New Hope which serves as a central point in the Star Wars timeline.

The pre-Battle of Yavin clue is a way to help define when certain events take place in the Star Wars timeline.

Although Andor is set before the Battle of Yavin, the Star Wars timeline also includes events that take place after the Battle of Yavin, denoted by ABY.

This system is the same as our international symbols for years, BCE/CE and BC/AD.

Andor’s timeline

As Andor’s opening episode makes clear, the series begins in 5 BBY, five years before the events of A New Hope and, more importantly, Rogue One, the film where we meet Cassian Andor.

The series begins in a dark time across the galaxy as the Empire has reigned for 12 years now and is at the peak of its powers.

In its two confirmed seasons, Andor is set to chronicle Cassian’s journey as he grows from a ruthless thief to a hero of the Rebellion.
