Arsenal are considering signing a defender entering the final days of the transfer window after Mohamed Elneny suffered a serious injury in the win over Fulham.

The Gunners have looked to strengthen their options in the middle of the pitch throughout the window but have instead opted to prepare other parts of the squad.

However, the need for a midfielder has increased in recent days, with it being unknown how long Elneny will be out with Thomas Partey also knocked out.

Injuries will leave Arsenal with Granit Xhaka and Albert Lokonga as their only midfielders and the club will be able to adjust their transfer plans.

A striker is believed to be at the top of Mikel Arteta’s trade list on deadline day as Arsenal consider a move for Shakhtar’s Mykhalo Mudryk after Wolves said key player Pedro Neto is not purchase.

Arsenal manager Edu Gaspar has previously stated that the club will carry out the necessary financial measures for players who improve the team in the long term, meaning they may not go for short time.

The Gunners are working under restrictions, having spent more than £100 million this summer, and it will be difficult for the club to sign a winger or midfielder.

Which midfielders could Arsenal look to replace Elneny?

The Gunners could finally make a move for Youri Tielemans, having been strongly linked with the Leicester defender since January.

The Belgian is unlikely to sign an extension to his contract which expires next summer, and Leicester have lowered their asking price to £38 million.

Although Tielemans is more of a creative picker than a defender, he speaks well of Arsenal’s plan to sign players they’ve been eyeing rather than changing their targets.

Arsenal have also made inquiries about Palmeiras midfielder Danilo with the Brazilian side wanting €25 million for the 21-year-old.

The more expensive target is Florian Grillitsch, with the Austrian available on a free transfer after leaving Hoffenheim this summer.

Lens’ Seko Fofana and PSG’s Leandro Paredes are potential options but the club are likely to move for either Danilo or Tielemans, given their long-standing interest in the pair.

Whether the Gunners have more money to sign Mudryk or a midfielder remains to be seen but it looks like Elneny’s injury could end up costing Arsenal a lot.
