the troops of Azerbaijan killed an Armenian soldier on Friday during the clashes that take place on the border between the two countries of the caucasus for the second consecutive day, in a burst of tension that threatens the talks scheduled this weekend in Brussels.
This Friday morning, “the Azerbaijani armed forces violated the ceasefire in Sotk (a border Armenian town), using drones”, the Armenian Ministry of Defense declared in a statement.
According to the ministry, an Armenian soldier died and two more wounded. “The intensity of the confrontations decreased,” he specified hours later.
On Thursday an Azerbaijani soldier died and four Armenian soldiers were injured in clashes between these countries, which have been fighting over the region of Armenia for three decades. Nagorno Karabakh, an enclave populated mostly by Armenians but which is within the territory of Azerbaijan.
The two former Soviet republics fought two wars, one in the early 1990s. 1990 and another in 2020, for control of this mountainous area.
The clashes this Friday take place a few hours after the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, meets in Brussels on Sunday with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliev. The talks were sponsored by the European Union.
