The two former Soviet republics fought two wars, one in the early 1990s. 1990 and another in 2020, for control of this mountainous area.
The clashes this Friday take place a few hours after the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, meets in Brussels on Sunday with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliev. The talks were sponsored by the European Union.
