The young Spaniards have made more than 4 million trips between June 15 and September 15 benefiting from ‘Young Summer’, the Government campaign that offered discounts of up to 90% on land transport to people between 18 and 30 years old.
More than 2 million young people registered in the program, of which 1.13 million have traveled using these discounts. Of the total trips, and60% have been done by rail and the rest by road, according to data offered this Saturday by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda. In this sense, 69% of unique travelers have used the train to move around Spain and 51% went by road.
Renfe has sold more than 2 million tickets within the campaign. This figure represents 83.6% of the train tickets sold with the Verano Joven discounts, while 16.4% belong to other railway operators. In addition, 16,134 Interrail Passes have been registered throughout Europe only for young people, just under the 17,600 that were sold in total in 2022 for all age groups.
From the Ministry they highlight that These data “reflect the good acceptance of the program” and they underline its “important contribution” to promoting the use of public transport to discover Spain in a “more efficient and sustainable” way. The most popular destinations are in Andalusia, Valencia, Catalonia and Madrid, since 80% of trips have their origin or destination in these autonomous communities. 27% of the routes have been made between Madrid and Catalonia, Madrid and the Valencian community and between Madrid and Andalusia, where there is a high-speed rail connection.
Among the ten most popular routes are those between Madrid and Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Malaga, Seville, Granada and Zaragoza. The trips Madrid-Bilbao, and vice versa, and Barcelona-Valencia, and vice versa, are also among the ten most used routes. Andalusia leads as the region with the most registered internal trips, with 7.4% of the total, followed by Galicia (4.5%) and Catalonia (3.5%). Discounts amounted to 90% for medium distance services conventional and for regular bus trips under state competition, while for Avant, high speed and Interrail passes it was set at 50%.
