Mithril shirts, ships and silver: LOTR lore reveals why the ore is so precious

The Lord of the Rings tells that Mithril can be used as a cloak, ship and ink, explaining why the ore is so valuable to the Dwarves.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power episode 4 has shown us why Durin and the Dwarves are so wary of Elrond – they have discovered that Mithril is difficult.

Mithril was the most abundant mineral found in all of Middle-earth; however, the Mines of Moria/Khazad-dum are not the only places where they can be found.

In fact, Mithril does a lot more than provide protection against Orcs or Cave Trolls; It can also be made with ink, stones, crowns and even all ships – here’s the LOTR breakdown of the lost ore.

What is Mithril and why is it so expensive?

Mithril is a rare gem found deep in the mines of Khazad-dum. In The Rings of Power, Elrond visits Prince Durin and discovers that his wife, Princess Disa, is the first Dwarf to uncover the Mithril vein in the ‘old mines’. However, the mining of Mithril remains in danger, so Durin’s father prevents its removal from the mountain.

Durin explains how the Dwarves call silver “Grey Glitter” but when translated into Sindarin, you get the Elven word “Mithril” – because ‘mith’ translates to grey. gray and ‘ril’ to shine. The generic name for the substance is known as “Moria-silver” or “True-silver”.

Mithril is very valuable to the Dwarves because it is not only a new stone, a form of mining favored by Dwarves, but also a material that proves to be more valuable than iron, the or silver.

In fact, Mithril is often said to be stronger and lighter than iron, can be hammered like bronze, polished like glass, and yet will not tarnish or darken – it will never rust, or lose his powers.

According to the book The Fellowship of the Ring, by Tolkien Gateway, Mithril was “ten times its weight in gold when the Dwarves could still mine it in the mines of Moria” – indicating its value increased steadily in the Third Middle Ages. Ground floor.

Additionally, it can be made into a variety of clothing, weapons and gems that can be worn with other clothing – see the next section for the uses of Mithril and who mined the ore.

Who else has Mithril and what is mining?

According to Tolkien Gateway, Mithril was not only found in the Dwarven city of Moria (Khazad-dum), but also on the island of Numenor and Aman (the land of the Middle West).

Mithril plays an important role in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings stories. Thorin gives Bilbo a cloak made from the purest Mithril in The Hobbit, which is given to Frodo in The Fellowship of the Ring.

This coat will save him during the battle in the Mines of Moria, where the Cave Troll will attack our Hobbit if he is not wearing armor. However, we also see Mithril earlier in this series, the silver found on the doors of Durin – the entrance to the mines that the Fellowship enters.

After the end of The Return of the King, Gimli is said to have built two great gates of Mithril that were given to Minas Tirith to replace the main gates destroyed by the Witch King during the siege.

In the First Age of Middle Earth, an entire ship was said to have been built that used Mithril for its support structures, the ship was owned by Earendil – Elrond’s father.

One of the Three Rings of Power, Nenya, is made of Mithril – this is the ring that falls into Galadriel’s hands.

Mithril was also used as a stone in the Star of Elendil collar, in the helmets of the Citadel guards of Minas Tirith and in the crown, made by Arwen for Aragorn during the War of the Ring.
