‘I heard’: £26m star suggests Liverpool wanted him before joining PL rivals
Denis Zakaria claims his agent informed him of interest from Liverpool before the Juventus forward joined Premier League side Chelsea on deadline day, speaking to Swiss media Blick.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was devastated by the sudden departure of Thomas Tuchel earlier in September; The former Borussia Dortmund boss handed over his P45 just days after he and Aubameyang re-joined Stamford Bridge.
But let’s leave a note for Zakaria’s thoughts.
He, too, was convinced of the Chelsea project after speaking to Tuchel. Now, the Swiss international has won himself Graham Potter.
Was Liverpool close to signing Denis Zakaria before he ended up at Chelsea?
“Thomas Tuchel was one of the reasons I went to Chelsea,” Zakaria explained. “He’s a good teacher. We didn’t spend much time with him, but that’s football. Everything is fast.
“I will have a new opportunity with a new coach, I have heard a lot of good things about him. I will do my best to participate.
“(The deadline day move) was all very fast. I didn’t know it was possible to move to Chelsea until six hours before the end of the transfer window.
Liverpool, like Chelsea, are in the market for midfield reinforcements on September 1St. And it appears they also expressed interest in Zakaria before opting for former Juventus team-mate, 25-year-old Arthur Melo.
“I heard from my agent,” said Zakaria when asked about a route from Liverpool. “But, in the end, it’s Chelsea. And I think I’d rather be in England than in Turin.
“It’s hard to say (what went wrong at Juventus). The style of football is not for me. I’m a player who needs a lot of space for my runs. Maybe I’m better in England.
Zakaria, who was left on the bench by Potter during last week’s 1-1 Champions League draw with Red Bull Salzburg at Stamford Bridge, has a £26 million buy-in in his Chelsea contract (The Standard).
Meanwhile, Liverpool are ready to offer Jude Bellingham as their record signing in 2023.
