Guinda bets on an ‘à la carte’ SMI, raising wages and activating the income agreement

Virginia Guinda, current candidate for the presidency of the CEOE, has been in favor of reforming the current design of the Professional Minimum Wage (SMI) so that its amount is adapted to each sector. The vice-president of the Catalan employers association, Foment del Treball, has lamented that this reference has become an “oversimplified” concept, probably because it has been overly politicized. During the presentation of her candidacy for the CEOE elections, which will be held on November 23, the businesswoman who will compete for the post with Antonio Garamendi, has been in favor of raising wages and giving a boost to the pact of revenues and is committed to promoting more dialogue within the organization.

Specifically, Guinda has called for a more pragmatic view when dealing with the SMI. He considers that, being such an important reference, perhaps it should not be the same one that is established for an industrial sector, that which is set in the agricultural sector or for a young person who joins the labor market. “We don’t have to be afraid of regulating from complexity,” she has settled.

From his point of view, the income agreement should be given a boost to face a very complex moment that requires more dialogue between the agents. “We all have to sit down and talk about how we face this stage, because the solution is not as simple as saying: the Government that has more public services because more aid is needed”, he assured during his intervention.

Asked about her position on wages, she stressed that these “have to go up” and that she does not know of any employer who does not want to raise them, although she has asked that these important issues be discussed more widely with the bases of the organization. In addition, she has recalled that the ability of employers to increase them also depends on how contributions evolve and with what taxes or concepts they will have to pay. “What I propose is that salary evolution be treated more holistically” and she has recalled that for companies to do well they need to be competitive.

Asked about taxes on banking and energy, she stressed that the current situation cannot be tackled with partial solutions, but that there must be an in-depth review of the tax system. Not only the amounts, but the object of the taxes. In her opinion, raising isolated taxes breaks the idea that what must be fought is the public deficit.
