Free subscriptions trigger the use of the railway Media Distancia by 71.7%


In the second month of free subscriptions for some rail services, November 2022, the number of Media Distancia passengers skyrocketed 71.7% compared to a year earlier. In total, up to 3.7 million trips were registered, as reported on Wednesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and collected by Efe.

54.37 million people traveled on the railway in the penultimate month of last year25% more in the interannual rate. Of these, 48.21 million travelers used routes of the commuter service and whose subscription was also free, which is 23.1% more than in November 2021.

Free season tickets boost travel

As for High Speed, a service excluded from these free subscriptions and whose statistics already include Renfe and Avlo services, November resulted in 1,724 million trips, 15.1% more, although below the use of domestic air transport.

The number of passengers by plane on the islands and on the peninsula reached 3.23 million, 26.7% more than in November 2021. The bus also improved their records in november, with a global calculation of 62.5 million trips, 20.4% more in the interannual rate, with a significant rise (50.1%) in long-distance services (1.17 million trips).

In general, public transport in November was used by more than 423.9 million people, 17.7% more than in the same month of 2021.
