Many Maoris have migrated from the country, and there is a lot of planning to ‘japa’. Apparently, entertainers don’t get away with this. Here are three famous people in the Yoruba Movie Indusrty who still live and work in Nigeria but their families are abroad.

Sanyeri

Mainly because of the comedy he does in movies, many people don’t pay much attention to the actor, Olaniyi Afonja, aka Sanyeri. However, despite his on-screen comedy, Sanyeri is a man who is serious about raising his family and spending time with them.

His beautiful wife Omolara and their two sons—Boluwatife and Olasunkanmi—live in Canada.

In a video that surfaced online a few months ago, many Nigerians were excited about the children’s foreign language. Especially since their father is mostly Yoruba speaking, they cut the picture of someone who has never been out of the country. In the video, the children encouraged fans to subscribe to their father’s YouTube channel and other social media accounts.

Explaining what fatherhood means to him, Sanyeri said in a previous interview, “Fatherhood means the head of the family, the husband to the wife, the father of children and fulfilling the duties and responsibilities expected of a husband to his wife.”

Talking about how he felt when he welcomed his first child, the actor said, “There is nothing special about a man having his first child. For a man who needs a child, he has a wife, when God gives him the firstborn, he will be happy and full of joy. Children are treasures, those who receive them should be grateful.

“I believe that the best investment I can make in life is the success of my children. I cannot compromise their future for anything. Even if I have a lot, whatever or, I will do everything in my power to ensure that my children never have an excuse in the future to abuse me or call me a responsible father.”

In an earlier interview with Sunday PUNCH, the actor said he was very poor when he got married to his wife and the only thing that stuck to his name was his ethnic credentials. However, they stuck with him and over the years, he has grown into a famous actor and filmmaker.

Mr Latin

The Amusans
Actor, Bolaji Amusan, aka Mr Latin, is another comedian who is loved by many. Although based in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Mr Latin’s wife, Ronke, and his children (son and daughter) live in Dublin, Ireland.

Mr Latin married Ronke in 1999 and their relationship has blossomed over the years.

The actor, who is the current President of the Nigerian Theater and Movie Producers, is very much in love with his wife and he is not hiding about it.

Speaking about why he decided to have his family live abroad, he said in an interview a few years ago, “That’s what we both thought. Teachers had a long strike at one time, and we felt like we weren’t giving our kids what we really wanted for them. We decided to move but because of the way I work, I can’t be there with them.

About how they faced a long-distance relationship, Latino said, “We talk about 10 times every day. I wake them up with phone calls in the morning to talk to my wife and kids until they get to school. We also talk on WhatsApp and video calls almost every day. I will visit them when I come to Nigeria.

The actor also said that he was not tempted to marry another woman even though his wife was not in the country with him. He said, “I will never be able to marry another woman. My wife is my mother, sister, friend and confidant. He is a very honest and trustworthy person. There is no reason to marry another woman.”

Okunnu

Despite not speaking, actor Wale Akorede, aka Okunnu, lets his fans laugh over his funny antics. Although he started his career as an artist in 1984, it wasn’t until a few years later that he started getting the qualifications required in the industry.

However, despite the carefree attitude he portrays in movies, Okunnu does not laugh at his family’s life.

His wife Wumi and three children— Jumoke, Hassan and Modupe— are in Canada. At one point, the actor also lived in Saudi Arabia, but he returned to Nigeria after some time.

Talking about why he left Saudi Arabia, he said, “Yes, there was a time in my life when I went to Saudi Arabia, but after a second thought, I realized that there was no place like home. Nigeria is my country, despite the challenges (here), just do it. I don’t regret coming back to my country.”

In an earlier interview with Sunday PUNCH, the actor said that he was inspired by her beauty and that it was hard to get. He said, “Because of her beauty and difficulty getting me. I don’t like small women. Because of her strong posture I always ‘trouble’ her. I also prayed that everything I saw I was in my dream what he saw. I was amazed and that encouraged me to go forward.

However, even though his family lives outside the country, Okunnu is not immune to the problems in Nigeria. In a statement on social media a few months ago, the actor lamented the depression of the country. Speaking in Yoruba, he said, “If we are watching and not talking, it is because we don’t want things to break. Nigeria is bad. Even men, women , the children or the elderly, all those who have a hand in making the nation as it is now, their lives will be ruined from generation to generation.

“The country is very bad. I cannot say that there is a part that is doing well. If we cannot enjoy our country as citizens, we will be like foreigners.”

Sharing his thoughts on why many celebrity marriages don’t stand the test of time, he said in the same interview, “Marriage is not something that people skip. You have to pray well and be sure because it’s for life. All marriages fail, not only celebrity marriages that don’t last. People talk about celebrity marriages because they are famous people.”
